In the early phase of Apple there was a competitor company named Atari, which Jobs wanted to beat and  hence wanted a name which comes ahead of Atari in alphabetical order.

It is also known that Jobs had spent memorable time in his childhood working in the fields of his favourite fruit Apple and once suddenly it came to him as an idea to name his new venture as Apple.
