Free Feast explains India’s status in the Supercomputer field | Innovative ISRO’s new Supercomputer-SAGA 220. | freefeast.info
When i added an article based on world’s top 10 supercomputers of 2011, some of my friends (asked or rather) gave me the idea of writing an article stating the current status of India in this particular field. Here is my attempt on their idea. I would like to dedicate this article to them and also thank them.
What is actually a Supercomputer? (Read this… will remove some misconceptions in your mind about supercomputers.)
On may 2,2011 (this year) Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), launched its fastest supercomputer SAGA-220.
This is named SAGA-220 because this is a Supercomputer for Aerospace with GPU Architecture-220 TeraFLOPS. The system uses 400 NVIDIA Tesla 2070 GPUs (Graphic Processing Unit) and 400 Intel Quad Core Xeon CPUs. They are interconnected by high speed interconnect supplied by WIPRO. These components are readily available commercially.
SAGA-220 is much faster than its predecessor EKA which means “Number One” in Sanskrit.
The funniest part is, even after this launch India is not in the top 10 countries’ list which make supercomputers(15th position). It won’t be a surprise to you that the US is the topper of this list with its 274 supercomputers in the top 500 supercomputers in the world. China has 41 computers in the top500 supercomputer list with one being the worlds top supercomputer. India has 40 supercomputers but to our disappointment only 4 are listed in the top500 list of super computers.
SAGA-220 is ranked at 28th position in the top500 supercomputers.
Hope you enjoyed this article…more to come…enjoy this free feast of knowledge… 🙂
