The new gym for training robots by Elon Musk
When we hear the word Gym, we only think about building muscles and doing cardio exercises. But this new gym has nothing to do with it. This is built for robots. Yes, you have heard it right.
The chief executive officer of the companies both Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk who is also a tech-lover has been building an open source “gym” for the robots. The computer programmers can train their robots in the new Gym. According to the reports, developers can share their research on artificial intelligence (AI) systems as they processed.
Patrick Moorhead, an analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, to Computer World, said, “Nothing beats a competitive environment to motivate developers. It’s like a monster truck rally for AI programmers.”
Mr. Musk has been working on the calculated strategy of mastering AI. He has said, AI is possibly the “biggest existential threat” for humans because it could be destructive in the wrong hands or simply go on the wrong way on its own.
Moorhead said, “The irony is that Musk needs much-improved AI to make his businesses automated. He doesn’t hate AI. He just thinks it should be controlled before it gets too powerful and the machines turn on humans.”
The gym for robots is a non-profit venture
Elon Musk has launched his non-profit research venture OpenAI with others in December. This gym is the product from OpenAI of $1 billion.
There have been long debates going on about the future of artificial intelligence. In the past, the questions often raised whether the AI can help humans (solving crimes by detecting particular patterns or driving four wheelers) or become the stuff which can terminate entire humanity that has been the favourite subject of all science fiction authors and film directors.
The patents and research of the new company will be open to the public to increase transparency about the potential of artificial intelligence. The company won’t be focusing on the commercial uses, said the supporters of the company which includes LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, venture capitalist Peter Thiel, the start-up incubator Y-Combinator, and Amazon Web Services.
Its a kind of lab for experimenting robots
The gym is one from the series of labs for testing latest technologies to develop algorithms for the OpenAI’s own research. The gym includes exercises for robots such as robot simulations and Atari games. It is designed to develop reinforcement learning, one type of computer skills required for motor control, and decision-making.
“Long-term, we want this curation to be a community effort rather than something owned by us. We’ll necessarily have to figure out the details over time, and we would love your help in doing so,” Greg Brockman and John Schulman wrote in an OpenAI blog post.
In research process of reinforcement learning, non-standardized test simulations and progress reports have proven major obstacles so far. The new open gym is for the robot-savvy public and by building one OpenAI hopes to make scientifically rigorous testing environments and thereby increase the development speed.
OpenAI suggests that the developers should start with simple, small-scale tasks such as “toy text” and step by step work their way up into board games and robots in 2D and 3D. Each and every task is numbered so the results can be compared directly by the analysts.
The OpenAI made the new announcement on Twitter.
